Dear Future Nurse,
We recently released a new video with a bold claim: nursing will change you. I was reflecting on my nursing experience, and the script practically wrote itself:
"Nursing will push you, challenge you. But in that adversity, you will grow. You will think faster, work harder, and discover strengths you never knew you had."
I truly believe that nursing changes lives. I experienced it personally, and now I see it happening with the BAYADA Scholars. Watching them transform from nervous students on their first day to confidently making a difference is just one additional way nursing has enriched my life. After reflecting and spending a lot of time with nursing students and other nurses, I have narrowed in on five unexpected benefits of nursing that I believe contribute to this change:
- Spending time with a lot of competent, compassionate, and hardworking people. Many nurses are not only caring but also brilliant.
- The experience of meaningful work can help you navigate significant challenges. Hard things don't seem as difficult when like-minded people surround you and share a "why" that is bigger than yourself.
- Continuous growth - there is always something else to learn and improve upon in nursing. And if boredom ever does creep in, there are almost always opportunities to try something new.
- You learn to ask for help. Nursing is not a job you can do alone.
- Nursing helps keep life in perspective. Dealing with literal life and death decisions on a regular basis helps you stay grounded and appreciate the little things.
I am a better version of myself having completed nursing school and experiencing the life-changing work of caring for others. I learn something new every day from my brilliant, funny, and compassionate coworkers. If you're still dreaming about becoming a nurse, watch the video and ask yourself: are you content to keep dreaming or are you ready to take that next step?
Until next time,
