According to Gallup's 2024 Most Honest and Ethical Professions Poll, nurses have been ranked as the most trusted profession for the 23rd consecutive year. This result is unlikely to surprise anyone, but I am contemplating what it means to work in the most trusted profession.
I am reminded of a moment in my first weeks of nursing school when I realized how much responsibility is placed on the nurse. I was informed I would soon be responsible for monitoring the patient and alerting the provider to any changes. I learned the providers (usually doctors, but sometimes physician assistants or advanced practice nurses) round on the patient once daily and as needed. I remember my awe (and surprise) that by the end of nursing school the powers that be would begin trusting me with this essential task. I can think of no greater honor than to be trusted with someone's life, and the weight of this responsibility has carried me through all of the hardest days of nursing.
As you contemplate your future as a nurse, I hope you'll take a moment to reflect on how life-changing training to become a nurse can be. It is an opportunity to become the best version of yourself. And perhaps years from now, with nursing school but a distant memory, you may feel immense gratitude for a younger version of yourself for accepting the challenge.
