Dear Future Nurse,
Last month, I wrote about some of the surprising ways nursing will change you. I touched on how it gives you the chance to work with compassionate, hardworking, and brilliant individuals. I also mentioned the important developmental step of learning how to ask for help. Closely tied to that is another truth—you’ll never do this alone.
When you choose nursing, you are choosing to join a community. It’s why a more experienced nurse ceremoniously pins new nurses as they enter the profession. It’s why you’ll feel an immediate connection when you meet another nurse. There’s a bond that forms instantly and it runs deep.
That bond begins in nursing school. At some point, you realize just how much help you’ll need, and you find yourself surrounded by future nurses—people who often have a natural inclination to help. Together, you’ll study for exams, celebrate the excitement of clinicals, and lift each other up when challenges arise.
Once a nurse, always a nurse. And even if your career path takes you far from the bedside, you will always remain part of this community. That’s simply how it is.
Are you ready to take your place in this community? Nursing will challenge you, inspire you, and reward you in ways you can’t yet imagine. You’ll have the privilege of doing meaningful work alongside people who share your passion for helping others. And through it all, you’ll never be alone. That’s the true gift of nursing.
Until next time,
