Dear Future Nurse,
It’s National Nurses Week, a celebration that begins every year on May 6 and ends on Florence Nightingale’s birthday, May 12. While she’s widely known as the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale was also a statistician. She used data to identify problems, implement solutions, and track outcomes—an approach still essential to nursing practice today.
According to a 2022 article in TS Digest, one of her more impactful contributions was the “Diagram of the Causes of Mortality in the Army in the East,” a data visualization showing that most soldiers were dying from disease, not battle wounds. Her ability to present data in a compelling visual format illuminated the need for widespread sanitation reform.
I share this story to highlight the myriad ways nurses shape the world around them. Nursing isn’t just a path to a stable career; it’s an opportunity to lead, innovate, and create the change you want to see in the world. You may not know exactly where your nursing journey will take you—but that’s part of what makes this profession so powerful: it offers nearly endless opportunities to make a meaningful impact.
