Students in the Thomas Edison State University (TESU) Accelerated BSN BAYADA Scholars Track at Cooper University Health Care experience a completely reimagined clinical experience at Cooper University Hospital, the region's busiest level I trauma center. The students begin training in a state of the art simulation lab the first week of classes and progress to seeing real patients in the hospital just weeks into the program.
Students benefit from seeing some of the most complex cases and learning alongside medical students from world-renowned clinical staff. BAYADA Scholars continue training at Cooper University Health Care throughout their educational experience and are provided a conditional offer of employment on admission to the program.*
BAYADA Scholars are learning from the best so they can eventually join their ranks.

Level I Trauma Center Experience
BAYADA Scholars build their nursing skills at the busiest Level I trauma center in the region, Cooper University Hospital. BAYADA Scholars work alongside medical students, experienced nurses, advanced practice providers, and renowned physicians.

One-On-One Clinical Experiences
During most clinical placements BAYADA Scholars are paired one-to-one with an experienced nurse who knows the patients, the hospital, and the unit. This is in addition to the clinical instructor on the unit with students during clinical rotations.

Student Success Resources
To prepare students for the intensive Accelerated BSN experience, BAYADA Scholars are given a comprehensive orientation. Students also have access to a student success advisor and tutoring resources to further support their academic success.
Conditional Offer of Employment
BAYADA Scholars Track students receive a conditional offer of employment from Cooper University Health Care upon admission into the program. Students who meet the intensive academic requirements of the program, pass the nursing licensure exam (NCLEX-RN), and meet standardized employment criteria will have the opportunity to begin their nursing career at Cooper after graduation.*
Cooper University Health Care offers a unique development opportunity for new to practice nurses with a two year nurse residency program. This level of support for new nurses is rare and shows the exceptional commitment Cooper has to developing and supporting their nursing staff. BAYADA Education is proud to partner with an organization that understands the importance of a skilled and confident nursing workforce to provide extraordinary care to patients.

State-of-the-art Simulation Lab
Hands-on learning begins the very first week for BAYADA Scholars. The immersive accelerated BSN experience takes students into the 12,000 square ft state-of-the-art SIM lab shared by Cooper University Health Care and Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. The lab includes impressive high-fidelity simulation rooms that feature a surgical suite, a birthing suite, pediatric room, and two inpatient hospital care rooms.
Data-Driven Clinical Experiences
The clinical experience for students in the BAYADA Scholars track was designed with exceptional precision. The clinical experience for BAYADA Scholars draws on over 60 years of nursing experience from Gloria F. Donnelly, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, FCCP Dean and Professor Emerita Drexel University and Krystal Sokolowski, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, CNL the clinical director with over 14 years of experience at Cooper University Health Care.
An essential feature of this clinical experience is the use of data to understand and continuously improve the quality of the clinical experience students receive. The support and training for the clinical instructors and nurses paired with BAYADA Scholars is another way BAYADA Education ensures students receive an optimal clinical experience. This commitment to continuous improvement and excellence is the foundation for accomplishing our mission to educate generations of world-class nurses.

Reforming Clinical Instruction in Nursing Education: The BAYADA Education Model
According to Gallup polls, nurses are the most respected professionals in the US, and they have been for the last 23 years. Yet, a shortage of nurses is projected to last into the next decade. This shortage is compounded by high turnover rates of nurses in their first positions and more than ten percent of new nurses leaving the profession. As a nurse educator for four decades, I believe the disconnect between the academic and clinical components of nursing education contributes to this shortage scenario. We can all agree that clinical instruction, the process of applying nursing knowledge in direct patient care, is the core of nursing education. Improving its quality demands a new model of nursing education --- an orchestrated partnership between academia and clinical settings that deeply involves selected staff from the clinical side in the design and delivery of clinical nursing education. I think of clinical instruction as the harmony produced for students when designated clinical instructors work closely with clinical nursing staff to craft and evaluate direct care experiences. This model is now being implemented through the efforts of BAYADA Education in partnership with Cooper University Health Care and Thomas Edison State University in New Jersey.
The BAYADA Education model of clinical nursing education incorporates the direct involvement of clinical nursing staff supported and guided by a Director of Clinical Instruction who selects patient care units and works with nursing staff to promote “best clinical experience practices.” Clinical nursing staff are enthusiastic “clinical partners” in the students’ education, collaborating with clinical instructors and receiving ongoing resources and staff development to hone clinical teaching skills. BAYADA Education clinical instructors and clinical partners (nursing staff) are deeply committed to both the goals of the clinical setting and the educational program to promote the highest quality of patient care through best practices in clinical nursing instruction.
The BAYADA Education model includes other unique features such as:
- Regular meetings between the BAYADA Education Clinical Instruction staff and nursing leaders in the academic setting, i.e., TESU, to monitor student progress
- Daily and end of course assessment by students on the nature and quality of their clinical experiences
- The BAYADA Education Resource Chain providing information/strategies through a Clinical Resource Website for all nursing staff and instructors in the clinical setting
- Seminars for clinical nursing staff
- The availability of a nursing education consultant who provides direction and resources
- A full time Director of Student Success, based in the clinical setting, who works with students experiencing academic or other difficulties and who regularly consults with academic nursing staff to promote student success
- Clinical Instructor access to the nursing program’s online courses to promote understanding of course objectives and harmonious academic and clinical learning
I believe that the management and coordination of clinical instruction is like leading a symphony orchestra with the goal of melodic results instead of cacophony for the new professional nurse. The BAYADA Education strategies to promote harmonious nursing education include:
- Understanding the “halls of practice,” i.e., the culture of clinical learning environments
- Knowing both academic and clinical players and their roles in “making” great education
- Coordinating and integrating the contributions of the players
- Leading and directing with purpose, passion, and grace
- Providing tangible and consistent support to nursing students that includes continuous student feedback on the model
- Understanding the needs of clinical educators and clinical staff for harmonious communication opportunities and high-quality instruments/resources to support the work of clinical teaching
- Keeping the needs of patients, families, and communities, at the forefront of learning to care
BAYADA Education and its partners are committed to reconceptualizing and improving nursing education, patient care, and future nurses’ fulfillment in this honored profession.
